I Qualified To Make You A Love Song Playlist Because I Was Mildly Famous On 8 Tracks

As a chronically online teenager at a Catholic girls’ school, I spent a lot of time surfing the internet for things to relate to. One of the things I liked the most was curating playlists and burning mixed CDs – things I could share with friends or favorites. If my crush had a particular song he liked, I would cling to it like it was my only way to relate to him. I would put that song on the mix CD and then 20 other songs that I thought they might like based on the one song that I knew they liked. Totally just as a friendly gesture and not as a passive way of showing affection… Absolutely not that…

Anyway, at the time, there was a platform that was very popular with my friends on Tumblr called 8tracks. I also decided to share music with strangers on the internet and was surprised that people also liked what I was listening to. I would create the playlist in my iTunes library, export it to 8 tracks, then create a crappy playlist cover image in Pages on my Mac.

I’m not saying that every playlist I create is everyone’s favorite, but I’ve loved doing it since my days of pent-up feelings, plaid skirts, and passive-aggressive messages after school. So, light a candle. Put this playlist. Think about your partner, your crush, your friends with benefits you wish you had more of, or your ex. Listen to every song, just a few, or just one, over and over, like I do.
